Visiting Sengkang Singapore – Important Information

Sengkang is the second most populous region in North-East Singapore. It is a planning area and residential town that is populated by more than 240,000 residents in 7 different subzones.

The Sengkang neighbourhood is surrounded by several other notable areas of Singapore, such as:

  • Seletar (North)
  •  Punggol (North)
  • Hougang (South)
  • Serangoon (South)
  • Pasir Ris (East)
  • Paya Lebar (East)
  • Yishun (West)
  • Ang Mo Kio (West)

Unlike many areas of Singapore, Sengkang is well served by the East and West LRT Lines. Consequently, it’s easy to access recreational facilities, malls and housing complexes here.

Sengkang has two main rivers that run through the time, Sungei Serangoon and Sungei Punggol and several recreational facilities and areas to check out such as:

  • Sengkang Riverside Park
  • Sengkang Swimming Complex
  • Sengkang Hockey Stadium
  • Anchorvale Community Centre
  • Sengkang Sculpture Park

Several malls are popular amongst residents in Sengkang.

Some of the most popular ones include:

  • Compass One
  • Rivervale Plaza
  • Rivervale Mall
  • The Seletar Mall

And directly south in Hougang, there are more malls to explore:

  • Buangkok Square Mall
  • Hougang Mall
  • Hougang Green Shopping Mall

Sengkang is known as a residential area, but once you are here, there is a surprisingly large number of things to see and do.

Getting to Sengkang Singapore by MRT.

Step 1: Access the most convenient station to your residence/room in the city.

If you are reading this article, we will assume that you are not staying in or starting your journey in Sengkang. Therefore, you need to be able to access the MRT network using a station close to where you are staying.

Not only is staying close to an MRT station very efficient for getting around Singapore, but it’s also cost-effective and environmentally friendly. Driving a vehicle means that you will spend time in traffic, emit more emissions and pay parking fees in Sengkang and elsewhere.

We suggest booking a room or staying at a condo within 500 meters or less from a station. The last thing you want to do is spend more time getting to a station than it takes to ride the train to your next destination.

Step 2: Plan your route to Sengkang Singapore (consider stations, transfers, and lines).

Getting to Sengkang is easy using MRT services, but some initial planning might need to be done if you need to make a line transfer along the way.

The section below will summarize MRT station and line information, followed by an overview of transfers required to get on the appropriate line to reach Sengkang.

MRT Station and Line Information

Remember that Sengkang is a large area in Singapore. Therefore, it’s actually serviced by two MRT stations and 14 LRT stations!

The two most convenient stations for accessing points of interest in Sengkang are:

Sengkang Station (NE-16)

Buangkok Station (NE-15)

Buangkok Station (NE-15) is the first station in Sengkang if you are travelling from the downtown area of Singapore. Sengkang Station (NE-16), is the next station north of Buangkok.

To reach either Buangkok Station (NE-15) or Sengkang Station (NE-16), you will have to travel to the North-East MRT Line.

The North-East MRT Line is shown in purple on the metro map.

Transfer Information to reach Sengkang and the North-East MRT Line

If you are not staying close to a station along the North-East MRT Line, you will likely have to transfer from a different MRT line to get to either Buangkok or Sengkang Station.

The three stations listed below are popular spots where commuters transfer from other lines to the North-East Line:

Little India (transfer between the North-East and Downtown Line)

Serangoon (transfer between the North-East and Circle Line)

Dhoby Ghaut (transfer between the North-South, North-East and Downtown Lines)

You can refer to station metro maps and ask station personnel if you need more help getting to the North-East Line from your starting point.

Step 3: Buy your ticket or a card.

There are several tickets/cards to choose from when heading to Sengkang via MRT. We classify them into three main categories as shown below:

1) Stored Value Cards

2) Singapore Tourist Passes

3) Single/Multi-Trip Tickets

We used a stored value card when figuring out how to get to Sengkang Singapore MRT, but Tourist Passes are popular among foreign tourists. They are well suited for travellers with a busy itinerary.

Consider the following questions if you are visiting Singapore:

Are you visiting from abroad?

How many days are you in the city (1-3 days or more)?

Do you plan on travelling a lot (MRT, LRT and Bus Services)?

If you are visiting for less than three days and want to explore a lot, get one!

You can buy multi-trip and single-trip tickets in stations throughout the city. Try to buy these traditional forms of tickets when traffic is light (avoid rush hour queues).

Step 4: Complete transfers (if needed) and take the MRT along the North-East Line to Buangkok or Sengkang Station.

Travel to the North-East Line, making any necessary transfers along the way.

Ride the MRT to either Buangkok Station (NE-16) or Sengkang Station (NE-16).

Hougang Station (NE-14) is directly south of Buangkok, so move closer to an exit when you stop here.

    2. Transfer to Bus Services at either Buangkok Station (NE-15) or Sengkang Station (NE-16).
    3. Transfer to Sengkang LRT (East or West Loop) to get closer to your destination.

As you can see, the LRT is integrated with Sengkang MRT Station and not Buangkok Station.

How long does it take you from Buangkok MRT to the center of Sengkang?

You can expect it to take 9 minutes to walk from Buangkok MRT Station to Sengkang Singapore.

Step 7: If you want to use Sengkang LRT, then walk from the MRT platform to the LRT platform at Sengkang Station.

Sengkang Station is very strategic because you can transfer between the North-East MRT Line and the East/West Sengkang LRT Loops.

It has both MRT and LRT platforms for trains. The LRT component of the station is built above the MRT component. The LRT and MRT share common concourses on both the ground Ground Level and Level 2.

You will get off the MRT at Basement Level 1

But the LRT platforms are located on Level 3 of the station. Therefore, follow the signs and travel up to Level 3.

Step 8: Travel along either the East/West Sengkang LRT Loop to your final destination in Sengkang.

Sengkang LRT consists of 14 stations spread over two loops, the East and West loop. It’s super convenient being able to access different areas of Sengkang with the LRT, so double-check the location of your point of interest and consider getting there with public transportation.
