Eating at ABC Brickworks in Singapore

ABC Brickworks Food Centre is considered to be one of the oldest and well-established hawker centres in Singapore. It is located in Bukit Merah, minutes away from several other food centres and shopping malls which are clustered around the Jalan Bukit Merah and Alexandra Road.

Although ABC Brickworks was first established way back in the 1970s, it recently underwent a renovation and opened to the public on June 16th, 2020.

One of the clear benefits of eating at hawker centres such as ABC Brickworks is the value for money. In other words, ABC Brickworks is known for affordable, delicious meals, and that’s why it has maintained such a strong reputation since the 1970s!

Eating here is way more affordable than dining at formal restaurants with full service.

The second clear benefit of eating at ABC Brickworks is the opportunity to sample numerous traditional dishes.

We have included a list of some of the most popular meals at ABC Brickworks for your convenience below:

Getting to ABC Brickworks via MRT

Step 1: Access a convenient MRT station.

When you begin your trip to ABC Brickworks using MRT, you have to access a convenient station without wasting time in traffic or spending additional money on taxi fees.

The best way to save time and money getting around the city is to book a room near a station and walk to/from it throughout your stay. This strategy doesn’t apply to people staying long-term in Singapore.

If you are visiting for a few days, refer to the example hotels below that are strategically located near stations. You can walk from them to their neighbouring station in 3 minutes or less.

 Luxury

Marina Bay Sands (5-star, 9.0/10 review score, very close to Bayfront Station)

Mid Range

Hotel Bencoolen @ Hong Kong Street (4-star, 8.3/10 review score, very close to Clarke Quay Station)

Budget

Chic Capsule Otel (2-star, 8.5/10 review score, very close to Chinatown Station)

If your accommodation in the city is already taken care of, skip down to step 2 where we describe the best stations and lines for getting to ABC Brickworks.

Step 2: Plan your route. Identify MRT lines and stations.

Singapore’s MRT network is extensive, but it does not provide direct access to ABC Brickworks.

ABC Brickworks is actually located between two MRT lines (East-West and Circle). Therefore, most people go to their preferred MRT station and arrange an onward bus connection to reach ABC Brickworks.

Best MRT Lines and Stations ABC Brickworks

ABC Brickworks is located south of the East-West Line (green) and north of the Circle Line (orange).

It is closer to the stations along the East-West Line, so try to travel along the East-West Line if you have a choice.

The most convenient stations along the East-West Line are:

Queenstown Station

Redhill Station

Tiong Bahru Station

Queenstown Station (EW-19) has two neighbouring stations:

Commonwealth Station

Redhill Station

Redhill Station (EW-18) is also located along Singapore’s East-West (Green) Line and east of Queenstown Station.

Tiong Bahru Station (EW-17) is on the Circle Line (Orange), south of Alexandra Village Food Centre.

If you are travelling along the Circle Line, Labrador Park Station (CC-27) is probably the most convenient for accessing onward bus connections.

Step 3: Purchase a ticket/card for your trip.

Since most people take a train-bus combination to ABC Brickworks, it is beneficial to have a card that works on both systems.

The three main types of tickets for the MRT system in Singapore are:

1) Singapore Tourist Passes

2) Stored Value Cards

3) Single/Multi-Trip Tickets

Tourist Passes are very convenient and potentially outstanding value for foreign guests. Once you buy one, you can use it for unlimited train and bus rides around Singapore. But if you are only doing a little sightseeing, you might not travel enough to warrant the cost – it’s your call!

If you are in the city longer than 3 days, then consider buying a stored-value card.

We used one of these while we learnt how to get to ABC Brickworks in Singapore. Once a cash balance is on the card, they are super easy to use and work on buses and trains.

You can buy single and multi-trip tickets right in the station on the way to ABC Brickworks. Try to avoid peak periods when ticket line-ups may be long and annoying!

Step 4: Travel to Queenstown, Redhill or Labrador Park Station using Singapore’s MRT.

Map out your expected line transfers in advance, and when you’re ready, ride the MRT to Queenstown, Redhill or Labrador Park Station.
