Getting to Hougang 1 by MRT 

Step 1: Plan your trip – MRT Lines, Stations and Transfers

Before stepping on a train to Hougang 1, you have to make sure you know what specific station is best for accessing the mall and also which line will get you there.

MRT Station and Line Information

There are actually two stations you can use to access Hougang 1:

Buangkok Station (NE15)

Hougang Station (NE14)

If you are travelling from the south (city centre), then Hougang MRT Station is the best place to get off the train. From the north (Sengkang and Punggol), Buangkok MRT Station is likely a better option.

Both stations are located along the North-East MRT Line

There are several MRT lines in Singapore. It’s easy to get around. But if you are not staying along the North-East Line, you won’t be able to get close to Hougang 1.

Serangoon (transfer between the North-East and Circle Line)

Not only does this immediately make your entire trip to the city more efficient, you also save money by avoiding unnecessary taxi fees and fees associated with parking your vehicle at different points of interest.

Ideally, you want to be staying within 500 m or less of the station.  In other words, you want to be within convenient walking distance so that you don’t have to walk too far in Singapore’s intense heat.

Step 3: Purchase a ticket/card to either Buangkok Station or Hougang Station.

Fortunately, several different types of tickets are available for public transport in Singapore. 

These are the main categories of tickets and cards available for the MRT:

1) Stored Value Cards

2) Singapore Tourist Passes 

3) Single/Multi-Trip Tickets

In most cases, Singaporeans and permanent residents prefer stored value cards. Once purchased, all you need to do is top it up, and you are good to go!

We used one of these while learning how to get to Hougang 1 in Singapore.

On the other hand, Tourist Passes are very popular with foreign visitors to Singapore.  This is especially true if you have a busy itinerary and maximize your public transportation options. 

You might be the right person for a tourist pass if your answer is yes to the following questions:

How many days are you in the city (1-3 days or more)?

Do you plan on travelling a lot (MRT, LRT and Bus Services)?

Single journey and multiple journey tickets are also available for your trip to Hougang 1.

Step 4: Ride the MRT to either Hougang or Buangkok Station. Complete transfers (if needed). 

Ride the MRT along the North-East Line to Buangkok Station (NE15) or Hougang Station (NE16).

Buangkok MRT Station (NE15) sits underneath Sengkang Central, near the junction with Compassvale Bow. 

Hougang MRT Station (NE14) is also an underground station built within the Hougang Central planning subzone. It is underneath the Hougang Central Bus Interchange.

Buangkok MRT station has two exits leading to ground level (A and B).

Expect to arrive at Basement Level 2.

Make your way up to Level 1 (street level) of the station. Refer to signs along the way.

Exit Information – Hougang MRT Station (NE14)

Hougang MRT station has three exits leading to ground level (A, B and C).

Similar to Buangkok Station, you will arrive at Basement Level 2. 

Go to Level 1 (street level).

Step 7: Use bus services from Buangkok Station or Hougang Station to Hougang 1 Mall.

Once you arrive at your station, the best option for getting to Hougang 1 Mall is by using a bus service. Walking, technically, is possible, but it would take you at least 20+ minutes from either Buangkok or Hougang Station to Hougang 1.

Instead, refer to the bus information below to find connecting bus services to Hougang 1.


Bus Directions from Buangkok Station to Hougang 1

Take Exit B and walk to the bus stop directly north of the station.

Get on bus 43 or 43M. Alight at bus stop Blk 953. Walk south along Yio Chu Kang Road. 

Turn left (east) onto Hougang Avenue 9 and walk to Hougang 1.

The bus ride from Buangkok Station to Hougang 1 should take you about 14 minutes (including the 6-minute walk after you get dropped off).

Get on bus 116 or 117

Ride on the bus until bus stop Blk 946a (#64489). Alight from the bus.

The bus ride from Hougang Station to Hougang 1 should take you about 11 minutes (including the 2-minute walk after you alight from the bus).
